Proprietary Trading Firm (Prop Firm)
Proprietary trading firm, or prop firm, is a company that lets traders access its own capital to trade, rather than the trader risking their own money, in exchange for a share of the profits. Most retail-facing prop firms today operate on a challenge-and-funding model rather than employing traders directly.
Why the model exists in this form
The term originally meant something narrower: a bank or trading house employing salaried traders to trade its own capital on a desk, no retail customers involved at all. The retail-facing version that now dominates the space inverted that relationship entirely. Instead of hiring and paying a small number of traders, firms sell an evaluation to anyone willing to pay for a shot at funded capital, no employment relationship, no salary, no interview. That shift is what let the model scale from a handful of institutional desks to an industry serving hundreds of thousands of retail traders.
Not one industry, several
“Prop firm” now covers meaningfully different businesses under one label: CFD-based firms trading forex and indices, futures-based firms running combines on regulated exchange contracts, and a smaller crypto-funded segment. Each has its own platforms, regulatory backdrop, and risk mechanics, a CFD firm’s drawdown rules and a futures firm’s combine rules are not directly interchangeable concepts even though the underlying idea, prove yourself, get funded, is the same.
What it actually means for you
You are a customer buying an evaluation product, not an employee, and none of the protections that come with employment (a base salary, notice periods, employment law) apply to the relationship. Every other term in this glossary, profit split, drawdown, payout cycle, exists because the firm is pricing and managing the risk of that customer relationship, not managing an employee. Understanding that distinction is the starting point for understanding why the rest of the industry’s rules look the way they do.
